Lake Havasu City Annual Regatta
May 1965

The Second Annual Lake Havasu City Regatta was held on Lake Havasu back in May of 1965. There were a total of 16 Pacific Catamarans entered in the race. While the city of Lake Havasu had just been established less than eight months earlier, sail boat races were becoming a popular sport in town. The races have survived in various forms over the years and still exist today. This year’s event, known as the Hobie McCulloch Cup, was held March 11-13. It was open to all multi-hulled catamaran sailors, but only Hobie Class Association of North America members were eligible to race. Competitors traveled from across the western United States to compete in the first event of the 2016 Hobie Division 2 Regatta schedule. Spectators were able to watch the multi-colored catamarans race across the lake from Windsor Beach, Lot 4. Lake Havasu is a large reservoir behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River, on the border between California and Arizona. Lake Havasu City sits on the lake’s eastern shore. The concrete arch dam was built by the United States Bureau of Reclamation between 1934 and 1938.
