BMX racing is popular with residents of Lake Havasu, and for many it is a family affair—a time to get out and enjoy the sport and the great outdoors. The real appeal of the sport is that pretty much anyone can participate, and the sport doesn’t require a lot of overly expensive equipment. A helmet, some pads, and a BMX bike pretty much gets you started. If you know how to ride a bike, then you can enjoy the sport of BMX.
Troy Faddis participated in the sport when he was younger, and now that his son, Joseph Kobata is involved in the sport it has him excited to get back into it. “I try to get out on the course at least once a week with my son, it is a real chance to bond,” says Troy. “We’ve been racing over 1 ½ years and are part of the Flight BMX team.” Troy also coached little league baseball, but it was the BMX racing that really connected him with his son Joseph. “It’s just a fun thing for the family to do. We always have a great time when we head out to the course. There’s a great connection with my son and other families are involved. The competition and the drive to be competitive and push each to be better is plenty of fun,” explains Troy.
“We’re having so much fun that I went out and bought my other son a BMX bike,” but Troy laughs, “I may have jumped the gun—he’s only three years old!”
